Estimating serving sizes

The size of a single serving varies with the type of food.  In the beginning, you may need to measure portions.  You can also estimate portions using your hand.
  1. Your fist equals 1 cup
  2. Your palm equals 3 ounces
  3. Your thumb equals 2 tablespoons or 1 ounce
  4. Handful equals 1 or 2 ounces of a snack food, such as nuts
Reading nutrition labels

All package foods have a Nutrition Facts Label.  Nutrition labels lists a single serving size, calories per serving, and the number of grams of fat.  According to experts we should limit our intake of nutrients listed first on the label.
